Security Lock Installation in Austin, TX
Did you know that protecting your family and home from external invasions is now easier than ever? Home security systems are increasingly more affordable and available. Some system designs include interior and exterior motion and glass-break sensors, floodlights, video doorbells, security cameras, and more. You may not need a whole-house security system. Even if that’s the case, you can still install new security locks on your home’s entry doors to provide more protection from would-be burglars.
Security Lock Standards – What You Need to Know
When installing new deadbolts or locks on your home’s entry doors, choosing products with the Builders Hardware Manufacturer Association (BHMA) Certified® Secure Home™ label is important. This label assures you that the door locks have been tested and certified to the highest performance standards in three areas.
What Do the Ratings on a BHMA Certified® Secure Home™ Label Mean?
Each Secure Home™ label will contain a rating for a lock’s security, durability, and finish. The ratings indicate how well the product performed during testing. An A rating means Best. A B rating means Better, and a C rating is Good.
Security ratings are a safety measure for how well a lock or deadbolt can resist impact. The impact could be from a possible intruder or the result of extreme weather conditions. A durability rating measures how well a deadbolt or lock functions after repeated long-term use. It also measures how well the hardware operates with excessive weight on the door, such as a hanging purse or bookbag. A finish rating measures how well door hardware withstands weather events and other factors, such as sun exposure, humidity, saltwater, dew, and even the oils from our hands, without causing discoloration or corrosion.
How are BHMA Ratings Different from ANSI Ratings?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) also uses a rating system based on rigorous testing. ANSI testing includes operational, cycle, strength, security, material evaluation, and finish categories. The ANSI rating system uses Grade 1 for the highest level of security, Grade 2 for intermediate security, and Grade 3 for basic security. Commercial and institutional facilities typically use Grade 1 locks. Grade 2 locks are popular residential locks, and many of today’s smart locks fall in this grading category. Lock grade 3 is the least secure of the three lock grades.
